Comparison

First Crack vs. Cropster

Cropster is built for commercial roasteries doing serious volume — multi-roaster fleets, production scheduling, green buying teams. If that's you, Cropster is probably worth it.

If that's not you, a lot of what Cropster does (fleet management, production scheduling, green buying) may go beyond what you need. First Crack focuses on the core for independent roasters: roast logging, bean inventory, analytics, cupping, Agtron color scoring, and community sharing, and the platform is free.

When Cropster is the right choice

  • You operate multiple roasters and need fleet-level visibility
  • You have a green buying team and need inventory across purchase cycles
  • You need EUDR compliance or production scheduling tools
  • You're doing enough volume that a monthly roasting-software subscription is a reasonable operating cost

When First Crack makes sense

  • You're an independent or small-batch roaster: one machine, one person or a small team
  • You want the core workflow (roast logging, inventory, analytics, cupping) without paying monthly
  • You want Agtron color scoring that Cropster doesn't offer
  • You want to share roast profiles publicly or generate side-by-side comparison links
  • You want a native desktop app (macOS or Windows) that talks to your roaster, not a web app or Electron wrapper
  • You're roasting without hardware yet — Guided Roast in the web app logs a live roast from just a timer and a probe

Common questions

Is First Crack a Cropster alternative for small roasters?+
Yes. First Crack is built for independent and specialty roasters who want roast logging, bean inventory, analytics dashboards, cupping workflow, Agtron color scoring, and community sharing without a monthly subscription that scales into the hundreds. The First Crack web platform is free. Bridge, the desktop app that drives live roasting on supported hardware (Kaleido M-series, Croaster, TC4, Phidget), is currently in private beta and free for approved testers.
What does Cropster have that First Crack doesn't?+
Cropster is purpose-built for commercial roasteries doing serious volume. It includes production scheduling, multi-roaster fleet management, green buying workflows, and EUDR compliance tooling. If you operate multiple roasters, buy green coffee at scale, or need compliance documentation, Cropster is likely the right choice. First Crack does not have these features.
Does First Crack have analytics like Cropster?+
First Crack includes analytics dashboards covering rate of rise (RoR), drop temperature, development time ratio (DTR), phase durations, weight loss, and roast-to-roast trend comparisons. These cover the core metrics independent roasters track. Cropster's analytics extend into production volumes, green inventory across buying cycles, and fleet-level reporting. First Crack does not replicate those.
Does First Crack work with my existing roaster hardware?+
First Crack Bridge, the desktop app, ships natively for macOS and Windows and currently drives the Kaleido M-series (M1 and M10 confirmed) over USB-serial or Bluetooth, plus Croaster over WiFi, TC4 (Arduino / aArtisan) over USB-serial, and Phidget thermocouple boards over USB — those three monitor-only. More roasters land as the beta-signup voting roadmap fills out. Even without hardware support yet, you can use Guided Roast (browser-based logging) plus the full analytics, inventory, cupping, and community stack today.
Is the First Crack platform actually free?+
Yes. The First Crack web platform is free — analytics, bean inventory, cupping workflow, recipe management, community sharing, and comparison links are all included at no cost. No subscription, no credit card required. Bridge is currently in private beta and free for approved testers; long-term pricing has not been announced.
